The Doctoral Consortium will provide a stimulating, open, and supportive environemnt for participants to present their current studies and collaboratively explore opportunities and challenges related to conducting doctoral research. About participants: Participants should be enrolled in a doctoral project around HCI and related fields of research, ideally between one and two years into the fray. They may already have a clear direction and can anticipate their contribution, but must still have remaining studies within their candidature. How to participate: Please submit a research proposal of no more than 4 pages in the OzCHI proceedings template as a .pdf attachment in email to dc.chair at ozchi.org on or before 18 August 2017. Structure your submission as follows: * Working Title * Abstract * Context/Background: What is the research about? What is its scope? Why is it important? * Prior Work: What do the experts in this field say about your area of research? What similar work has been conducted? * Gap and Research Question: What is the gap in prior work that needs addressing? What research question will your project answer? * Research Method: How do you propose to answer your question? Justify your method. How long will each stage take? (include timeline with dates) * Current Situation: How far have you progressed? (include summary of data/results if appropriate) What are your key concerns and obstacles at the moment? * Bio: Provided a brief biography, including names and affiliation of supervisors, PhD start date and date of expected completion. There is no fee to attend the consortium, however participants must register for at least one day of the OzCHI conference. Key dates: 18 August 2017: Submissions due by email to dc.chair at ozchi.org 6 October 2017: Notifications due out 28 November 2017: Doctoral Consortium held at QUT Gardens Point 29 November-1 December 2017: OzCHI 2017 main program Any questions? Message-ID: I'd love to work with some of you to see how this could work for you — and how to change it if it needs it. The map (actually a tree) is divided in three main branches — theory, challenge, and mobilization — and it's intended to capture the deep relationship between the three branches. In theory it could be used to characterize any example of CI4CG. Thanks for your thoughts! — Doug -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This is the first in a series of three symposia that discuss societal challenges in computational social sciences. Future events will be focused on "Bias and Discrimination" (Cologne, 2018) and "Polarization and Radicalization" (Zurich, 2019). > > We welcome submissions for workshops and tutorials proposals on any emerging topic at the intersection of the social sciences and the computer sciences. Members of all segments of the social media research community are encouraged to submit proposals. > > Workshops will give the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with a selected focus, providing an excellent forum for exploring emerging approaches and task areas and bridging the gaps between the social science and technology fields. > > Tutorials will be an opportunity for cross-disciplinary engagement and a deeper understanding of new tools, techniques, and research methodologies. Tutorials should provide either an in-depth look at an emerging technique or software package or a broad summary of an important direction in the field. > > Example topics include (but are not limited to): > * Inequality, imbalance, bias, discrimination > * Digital health > * Urban informatics > * Web mining for social good > * Algorithmic regulations > * Impact of online phenomena on the offline world > * Credibility of online content > * Impact of AI on the social life > * Rich representations of social ties > > > SUBMISSION GUIDELINES > > Authors are kindly requested to send a PDF with their proposal at the following email address with the subject "Workshop/Tutorial proposal": > css.eurosymposium at gmail.com > > Proposals for workshops and tutorials should be no more than three (3) pages in length (10pt, single column, with reasonable margins), written in English, and should contain: > * A concise title > * The names, affiliations, and contacts of the organizing committee > * Duration of the event (half-day or full-day meeting) > * A short abstract describing the scope and main objective of the event > * A short description of the main topic and themes (2 paragraphs maximum) > * A description of the event format and a list of proposed activities > * An approximate timeline of the activities > * Historical information about the event, when available > * [Workshops only] A description of how workshop submissions will be evaluated > (invited contributions, peer review, etc.) > > Workshops and tutorials will be selected based on the following criteria: > * Timeliness of the topic > * Potential to attract the interest a diverse set of attendees > * Activities that are different from the classic mini-conference format > * Involvement people of different backgrounds in the organizing committee > * Addressing topics at the intersection of different disciplines > > > > TRAVEL GRANTS > > Due to the generous funding by Volkswagen Foundation we are able to offer up to 40 travel grants to early career researchers whose talks are accepted for the symposium. Travel grant recipients will be selected by a committee of experts based on their academic excellence, financial needs and diversity (e.g. gender, geographical and disciplinary diversity). > > Please indicate in your submission 1) if you wish to apply for a travel grant, 2) your motivation for the grant application and 3) whether you will still attend the symposium without a travel grant. > > The grants aim to especially support attendees with limited travel resources and attendees from countries where Computational Social Science is not yet well established. > > > You can unsubscribe for this list at any time through this link: > Unsubscribe Douglas Schuler douglas at publicsphereproject.org Twitter: @doug_schuler A Mobilization Story: Patterns for the Impending Emergency Public Sphere Project Collective Intelligence for the Common Good Mailing list Creating the World Citizen Parliament Liberating Voices!
