More than ever before, local talent, producers, and organizers are sharing resources, networking, press responsibilties, and audiences. It is with this cooperative power in numbers in mind that the recently formed Seattle Independent Film and Video Consortium (SIFVC) and the more veteran Seattle Independent Media Coalition (SIMC) announce the first shared Open House to be held on Friday, September 20th at 8:00 pm at 911 Media Arts Center (117 Yale, across from the new REI in downtown Seattle). The Open House will bring together for the first time media mavens and producers of Seattle's hottest independently run festivals, screenings, on and off-line zines, "pirate" radio stations, and media literacy and activist groups. The Open House aims to provide a unique and art-filled forum in which collaborative ventures can be discussed and expanded. More than forty art groups are slotted for the occasion and will have samples of their respective projects on hand for review. For example, Micro-Radio F.U.C.C. 89.1 FM will broadcast live readings from the new poetry book by Real Change, the homeless newspaper; Nice Soft Rutabaga will lead off the evening with a video shorts extravaganza, and Citizen Vagrom's well-known kiosk will serve up various "Non-Corporate" perspectives throughout the evening. The Open House promises to be a rare and unique treat. Come and celebrate the incredible diversity and excitement of independent media. That type of talk is, IMO, completely inappropriate and futile to attempt by e-mail. Posting that kind of communication (flaming) on a semi-public list like scn at scn.org is even worse. SCN is a volunteer-run organization and a divisive attitude does not help our mission. >Please< try, if at all possible, to show a little bit of respect and consideration for each other. The AIDS Walk will be this Sunday, September 22. Once again, SCN will field a team in the event. It is beginning to look like there will be enough participation for me to bring along our SCN banner so we can be a little easier to find. If you are interested in joining us for the walk, please let me know so I can get you on the list of folks to watch for. If you are unable to take part, please consider pledging to support the team. To help us look more like a team, it would be great for everyone to wear their SCN T-shirt. If you don't have one - and want one - let me know and we'll try to have enough on hand for you to buy one on site. thanks, Jim -- Jim Horton jimh at scn.org Seattle Community Network * * * * * * * * * * * * * * From the Listowner * * * * * * * * * * * * . I am a bit late this year. As you may recall ACLU-Washington and CPSR/Seattle helped organize the anti-censorship rally last December. In addition, the Harmful to Minors bill raised its ugly head again in Washington State. With Governor Lowry leaving it is not clear that privacy and free speech will enjoy the same privilages that it has had in the last few years in this State. This is why it is more important than ever that we support organizations like this. In the past we have sponsored a page in the ACLU-Washington calendar project. I am looking for any donations - recommended is $40.00. Please let me know if you want to pledge and how much. I am going to ask you to send me a check ASAP since I am rather late this year. It is due on the 27th. In return for a contribution of $40 or over, you get an ACLU appointment book - full of civil liberty quotes and relevant cartoons. However, this year the donation is not tax-deductible since it will be used for lobbying. Thanks for your consideration. Aki * * * * * * * * * * * * * * From the Listowner * * * * * * * * * * * * . We had symptoms of hardware problems, either CPU or memory in several crashes this week. Sun was out in less than 4 hours with a replacement CPU board. All that went well, but I can't say the same for getting the terminal servers re-connected. The network interface on the SCN machine that talks to the terminal servers was not configured correctly after the CPU board install, and, not having the documentation for the board anywhere but at home, I couln't remember the one little item that needed to be done to get the interface working again. Well, it's all taken care of now, and I took the opportunity to install the new memory in the SCN main machine, and in our mail machine. We now have two machines with 96MB of memory each. I don't know if this will continue, but the load factor usually climbs up into the low 20's or 30's immediately after a reboot. Now we are cruising along at under 5 with 48 users logged in. Bodes well for the future, I hope. We also have a new machine sitting in my basement, which is getting configured to be scn3, which will be another machine to log into, splitting the load with the present main machine. There's some space issues to resolve with the library before we can get it installed there (We're getting bigger than our one table will hold!). Now if we could just get the phones working 100% of the time ... (we're working on it!!) Thanks for using SCN! We DO make progress ... though it sometimes comes later than any of us would desire. -randy * * * * * * * * * * * * * * From the Listowner * * * * * * * * * * * * . If you have already donate - thank you! If you are thinking about it - this would be a good time to let me know. Again, the recommended amount is $40.00 but I will accept any pledge. The ACLU and other civil libertarian organizations have a big challenge ahead of them in the next legislative year. This is a wonderful way to offer support.
