SCN General Meeting - May 28,1997
35 attendees

7pm meeting called to order, introductions and SCN principles and beliefs.

7:15-8:10pm Committee Reports:

Fundraising Committee - Next meeting Saturday, June 7 from 4 to
5:45pm at the Greenwood Library on 80th & Greenwood. This will be a
workshop; all welcome but the Planning Committee and SCNA board members
are especially urged to attend.

Hardware/Software Committee - As of June 23, we will have 40
dialup phone lines to SCN (we currently have 20). SPL has 64 lines of
their own, SCN is allowed 4 of those during the day and 8 after hours.
Randy will try to negotiate for more. No treasure r's report since
nothing much has changed. The new phone lines will eat up much of our
funds.

Other news from HSW; PAN (City of Seattle's Public Access Network)
will be closing down their dialup access on July 31. They will continue
to maintain their web site, and plan to offer limited forum access to
politicians and city offices via the web, but will offload the other stuff
to SCN. Their studies have shown 6000 logins to SCN via PAN monthly,
which they say are 1/2 of their total dialups. They also say only 1/2 of
their dialup lines are ever in use (8 out of 16) and only 20% of the users
are ac tually city of Seattle residents. Hopefully, our new phone lines
will help us meet the new demand for dialup access.

PINE mailreader is still being finely tuned, should be offered soon. Just
a couple of problems left to work out.

Services Committee - There is a continuous move to make it easier
to access SCN's content on our website. Every month at least a couple of
menus will be upgraded. SCN's homepage will be getting a new look soon.
Come to Services (first Thursday of each month, 7pm Broadview Library),
help work on it. Will also try to get closer to offering personal
webpages.

Registration ad-hoc subcommittee met twice; came up with recommendation of
electronic database with partial electronic (online) registration a
reality. Need to contact other freenets about their processes. The
Chebucto package includes online registration, but the hardware committee
needs to test it further prior to offering it to SCN. Randy would need to
move the machine to the library basement. Another option would be to
have a pro-bono volunteer from Microsoft set up a new registration
database; Carl <carlp at scn.org> will advertise this in Microsoft's
newsletter.

Classes offered: LYNX classes will be offered periodically, the May 17th
class was favorably received. E-mail classes via the Seattle Public
Library are offered weekly now. Still need help with instruction. To
assist, contact <help at scn.org> to attend, contact the SPL at 386-INFO.

Mentor workshop offered June 28 for new and used IP's and mentors. Mentor
orientation strongly recommended as a prerequisite, but exceptions are
made all the time. To register contact <nancyk at scn.org>, to assist in
teaching the workshop, contact Brian <kv9x at scn.org>.

Planning Committee - Will be submitting a suggested distribution
list of tasks among committees to the SCNA Board on June 11.

Working with HUD on a neighborhood network idea. This would include
public access terminals for low income housing. Americorp s personnel and
equipment are available; they want volunteers from SCN to help get it set
up and running. Come to the meeting on June 10, 2-4pm. Contact Lorraine
<femme2 at scn.org> for more details.

Outreach - Meets first Monday of each month; contact
<jimh at scn.org> for location info. Steve Hoffman <bb096 at scn.org> will be
editor of SCN electronic newsletter. Will try for monthly editions, with
paper copies via snail mail being offered once or twic e a year. Steven
Mudd <sjm at scn.org> will write main column, everyone else is encouraged to
contribute articles. Doug Schuler will write the promotional newsletter
that will accompany the Annual Appeal (yes, we want *more* money).

8:10-8:40 Discussion breakout groups. Meeting adjourned.
