Independent Web designers who need help launching sites can turn to
the Web Development Fund. The fund, sponsored by WebLab with PBS
Online, will underwrite independent Web projects that bring a new
outlook to a private or public concern. WebLab is an online lab set
up for the purpose of expanding the Web's potential, according to
founder Marc Weiss. It is a spin-off of P.O.V. Interactive, PBS's Web
publishing division. Chosen WebLab projects will be part of the WDF
site and will receive $25,000 or less, but grants could go as high as
$50,000. Designers are expected to put matching funds toward the
