Majordomo has the concept of an "owner" for each list. The
owner of a given list approves certain user "subscribe" and "unsubscribe"
commands (the ones that majordomo doesn't automatically approve; for
instance, if someone tries to unsubscribe something other than their
own email address from a list, majordomo asks for approval). Most
list maintenance is done for the owner by majordomo, and the rest can
be done by the owner using emailed commands to majordomo.

Majordomo also has a concept of "open" and "closed" lists. The major
difference between "open" and "closed" lists is what happens when a
user submits a "subscribe" request for the list. For a closed list,
the request is forwarded to the list owner for approval. For a open
list, the request succeeds automatically if the address the user is
asking to subscribe is their own (according to their mail headers). In
either case, the owner is notified of all successful "subscribe" and
"unsubscribe" actions.
