WHERE?
Hardware/Software Meeting: 2-4pm on Sat. March 16, 1996 at the
Shoreline King County Library Branch. The meeting is open to the
public.

BY WHOM?
Seattle-area amateur radio operators

BRIEF EXPLANATION:
A group of SCN volunteers and users, who are also amateur radio
operators, will be demonstrating a technology which *may* be
utilized by SCN to provide an alternative means to access SCN and
also to aid the development of an important public service .

DETAILS:
Amateur radio operators from the King County Amateur Radio
Emergency Service (K.C. A.R.E.S.) and a few other local groups will
bring a portable system capable of 9600 bps TCP/IP networking over
radio to the next Hardware/Software meeting.

Following the demonstration, we will discuss the feasibility of
connecting a radio-internet gateway to the SCN equipment. If it
appears that no significant technical problems exist, the radio
operators will propose the project to be discussed and voted
on by SCN/SCNA at the next General Meeting.

BACKGROUND:
Now that the general public is increasingly using the internet to
satisfy personal and community information needs, it makes sense to
increase our access options. One way is through amateur radio. In
recent years, amateur radio licenses have become very easy to obtain,
and are granted to people of all ages. Further, technological
developments have made it possible to assemble a portable digital
amateur radio station for around $300 (used).

The Puget Sound TCP/IP Users Group has created an effective system of
local area networks (LANs), including 4 digital repeaters and one
experimental internet gateway.

The experimental gateway works fairly well when it is "up", but it is
not reliable enough to be utilized for regular and emergency internet
traffic. It is the goal of the demonstrators to eventually establish
a stable gateway, providing dependable service for both routine and
emergency use.

You can call (206)782-2827 or (206)271-4657 to reach BBSs
which are connected to the Puget Sound TCP/IP (radio) network.
These are operated by individual amateur radio operators free of
charge. Please respect their wishes concerning the use of their
   systems.
