I'm copying this response to Mike to the scn list - seeing as he posted the
complaint so widely.

I'm sorry if you found the rather intense reminder at logon to be rude.  We
have only limited space available for users to store their files, and some
people are much less attentive to the logon messages than you seem to be,
so we have to 'get in their face' a bit, just to make sure that they see
the message, and to be just obnoxious enough to make people WANT to delete
their extraneous files.  If you can think of a better way to 'control'
people without establishing hard quotas - which would eat up significant
system resources, please let us know.
